HISTORY

To the north and east of the village of Sowerby, lines of a Roman road can still be seen in the fields. They are long the Green Lane and were known as The Saxty Way.

Sowerby is mentioned in the Domesday Book as Sorebi in the Yarlestre hundred. The head manors of Easingwold and Newsham split the land. During the Norman invasion, the manors were split between Earl Morcar and Ligulf. After, the land become property of the Crown.

Overlordship was granted to the Mowbray family who then granted the land to William Lascelles in 1228. The Lascelles held the manor until 1602 when they sold it to the Meynell family. Since then, the manor has followed the inheritance of the manor at North Kilvington.

Pudding Pie Hill – an artificial mound located on the east bank of the Cod Beck, which is just off Blakely Lane. It was partially excavated in 1855 by Lady Frankland Russell and was found to be a sepulchral tumulus known as a bowl barrow. Remains of a Saxon Warrior and two other skeletons were found, along with cremated bones, artefacts and coins.

St Oswald's Church – named after Oswald of Northumbria. The church features one war memorial located outside and two inside the church. The other two memorials can be found at Sowerby Methodist Church. The memorials list the men who died during the two World Wars.
