A friendly market town with tons of adventures to offer, Skipton certainly isn’t for those who simply want to while away the time idly. And if you decide to pay the place a visit with your beloved or the family, be ready to see and enjoy the best of both its countryside and urban scenes.

Among the first historic records of this town could be traced as early as 1086 in the Doomesday Book, a manuscript that recorded the great survey of majority of England and parts of Wales. The said survey was executed for William I of England, who was popularly known then as William the Conqueror. In the said medieval document, the town went by the name of “Scepeton”.

By 1090, a wooden motte-and-bailey was constructed in the area by Robert de Romille, a Norman baron. This structure soon became known as Skipton Castle, a major landmark that encouraged the urbanisation of surrounding areas during the Middle Ages. Back then, the castle attracted an influx of families whenever war and disorder broke out.

The castle didn’t only provided refuge to local townsfolk, it’s strategic location enabled Skipton to grow in importance in terms of economic activity. By 1204, a charter was granted to the town, allowing the emergence of a weekly market where people traded woolen goods and sheep. The abundance of sheep in the place is probably why Skipton’s name is derived from the Anglo-Saxon words “sceap” (which means “sheep”) and “tun” (translates as “town”).

Whether you’re looking forward to a relaxing day with the family or you simply want to be with your own thoughts, Kilnsey Park offers you the perfect tranquil atmosphere. Watch squirrels and birds thriving in their natural habitat, catch some fish down by the spring-fed lake, or appreciate the beauty of lovely Skipton flowers and butterflies along a nature trail. And if you’re lucky, you may be part of some seasonal events that are held here every once in a while.

Parcevall Hall Gardens - Another ideal place to stop and contemplate, the gardens is certainly worth checking out if you wish to witness a breathtaking view of the Dales. Alongside the idyllic setting is the bursts of colour you’ll find in many areas around here – from its woodland area to the formal terraces. With several lovely and romantic sights to see here, it won’t come as a surprise if you’ll feel like giving your better half or fiancée a gorgeous bouquet of flowers in Skipton while you both are taking a leisurely stroll around Parcevall Gardens.
