Flower Delivery to Sherburn in Elmet with Clare Florist

Sherburn-in-Elmet is a large village located in the Selby district of North Yorkshire, England. It’s also considered a civil parish and an electoral ward in this county. It has the distinction of one of three local places to have the ancient Celtic kingdom of Elmet in its name, along with Scholes-in-Elmet, and Barwick-in-Elmet. The population as of the 2011 census was 6657.

Elmet used to be an ancient kingdom in Briton. During the early Middle Ages, it was renamed the west riding of Yorkshire, around the 5th century. It’s believed that it was bordered in the south by the River Sheaf, and the River Wharfe in the east. Elmet may have been ruled by Coel Hen, a Celtic king.

Due to the history of the region, the village can be traced back to ancient roots. Likely it had Roman origins, and could have been a part of Barkston Ash, which is located in the west riding of Yorkshire.

Beside the All Saints’ Church in Sherburn-in-Elmet is a field. It’s believed that the field used to be the site of the palace of the kings of Elmet. It was given to them by the Athelstan to the Archbishops of York around the 10th century. The manor of Cawood would have also been part of the exchange.

An Anglo-Saxon church was originally on the site of where the All Saints’ Church was built around 1120, and features Norman pillars. Later, a large rectangular tower was built to house eight bells.

The Battle of Towton was fought close to the church in 1461. This was one of the battles during the War of the Roses, which caused a change in monarchy at that time. Apparently, King Edward IV won the Battle of Towton. He had used the church tower as a point where he could survey the battle lines. Many believe this to be a legend due to the layout of the land and weather conditions. Supposedly, it  would not be possible to see the battleground from the tower.

During the time of the English Civil War, King Charles I had the village garrisoned for the Royalists. They had a stronghold at Selby and one in the capital of York. From here, they would command approaches from the west and the south. In 1645 the Parliamentarians attacked and won. In 1645, the battle of Sherburn-in-Elmet occured. The Royalists attacked and defeated the Parliamentarians, and they responded with a counter-strike that the defeated the Royalists during the First English Civil War.

The village has a recreational fishing area, the Bacon Factory Fishing Pond. People can fish for many different varieties of fish.

Sherburn-in-Elmet is popular with sports enthusiasts. The Sherburn Everseley Cricket Club, Bears Amateur Rugby League Football Club, and the White Rose Football Club all have had their base of operations here.
