Forming a major part of the civil parish of Kirklington cum Upsland, Kirklington is located close to the A1. It lies within the Richmond (Yorks) UK Parliament constituency as well as within the Bedale electoral division of North Yorkshire County Council and the Tanfield ward of Hambleton District Council.
History
A white-ware burial at the Lady well behind the Hall forms evidence that Romans once occupied the area. The remains of a Roman Dere Street fort also lie close to the village on the A1. Also a little beyond the village is Camp Hill, which are the remains of a camp during the Iron Age.
In the Domesday Book, Kirklington is mentioned as Cherdinton along with Yarnwick. Count Alan of Brittany was the principal owner during the time. During the Norman invasion, Rosskell was the Lord of the Manor but the title was granted to Robert of Mutiers by the Crown.
The Mutiers family – whose Anglicised family name was Musters – held on to the land until the mid 14th century. From then, it passed to the Wandesforde family through marriage.
