Flower Delivery to Boltby, North Yorkshire

Boltby is a civil parish and village located in the Hambleton District of North Yorkshire in England, specifically sitting on the edge of the North York Moors National Park and about 6 miles north-east of Thirsk.

History

The Domesday Book mentions Boltby as Boltebi in the Yalestre hundred. After the Normans invaded the land, it was then owned by Hugh, son of Baldric, who then also granted Lordship of the local manor to Gerald of Boltby. Previously, Sumarlithi, son of Karli, was the Lord of the manor.

Though the village no longer have a pub, it had 4 during the construction of a water supply and reservoir to Thirsk, with the last of them being the Johnstone Arms, which is now a farm with riding stables. In the 20th century, fewer than 5 new houses were built in the village, giving it a total of 43 in 2005.

One unique tradition of the village is the act of giving free water in perpetuity to its buildings, which dates back to the late 19th century when the new reservoir was constructed and water piped through the Ravensthorpe Manor and the surrounding areas.

Another significant event that occurred in the village was when its eastern part was badly affected by flood in 2005 due to the overflowing of the Gurtof Beck, where several buildings were destroyed. The local reports said that the water levels during that time were between 2 to 3 metres deep.

Landmarks/Attractions

There are several Grade II Listed buildings in and around the village, but the following are considered the most popular:

Bridge Over the Gurtof Beck

This is a packhorse bridge that was intended to carry packhorses that are loaded with panniers or side bags across the stream in the village. Like other packhorse bridges, it was also built on the trade route for the UK until the coming of the canals and turnpike roads in the 18th century.

Ravensthorpe Manor

This monument is scheduled under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act of 1979 as amended and appears to the Secretary of State to be of national importance. It is situated in a beautiful place gifted with beautiful scenery that is filled with Boltby flowers and lush trees.
