Askham Bryan is a small yet beautiful village and a civil parish in the unitary authority of the City of York in the north of England. This village falls 6 miles south-west of York, close to Askham Richard and Copmanthorpe and west of Bishopthorpe. The name of the village comes from the word ‘Ascam’ or ‘Ascha’ which literally means the ‘enclosure of ash-tree’. The ‘Bryan’ to this village’s name is Bryan Fitz. The village is a commuter and remote village of England and has lived in the shadows for long. However, with the development of Askham Bryan College and due to its scenic beauty reflecting the countryside of England, Askham Bryan has gained popularity in the recent years.
The village has been recorded in the Doomsday Survey of 1086. The name of the village was held after the reign of Bryan FitzAlan who held the manor from the 12th Century onwards. By 1600, the village was thriving with 12 farms on the Main Street. Above that, several traders of tailors, shoemakers, blacksmiths, three publicans and wine merchants settled in this village. From the 18th Century onwards, the Fawcett family played a major role in the development of this village.
In 1800, the Main Street was called the Town Street and reflected the surviving name of the Town Farm on the west of the village. After that, the development of Askham Bryan College for Agriculture brought about a revolution in the popularity of the village. Today, Askham Bryan is one of the most famous village of North Yorkshire.

The Church of St Nicholas is the late 12th Century building of this village with subsequent alterations, Magnesian which is built-in and a sandstone rubble with plain tile roof.
