Banwell is a small village located in North Somerset county, in the southwestern portion of England. Banwell was named after the Banwell River that flows through Somerset county. At the last census count in 2011, there were almost 2000 residents. Like many villages in England, Banwell has an ancient history dating back several centuries, and has its own church. Banwell has a temperate climate which makes it milder than the rest of England, but it does rain more often. The nicest months to visit are between June and August.

One notable archaeological site in town is at Banwell Camp. This is a manmade hill fort where many flint tools have been found from the Palaeolithic, Neolithic, and Bronze ages. It’s believed it had been used until the Iron age. The hill fort is made with a thirteen foot high bank and a ditch, and someone survived to the 21st century. It was originally excavated by JW Hunt, a member of the Banwell Society of Archaeology.

There have also been remains found of a Romano-British villa, back in 1968. This villa includes a courtyard, garden wall, and bath house, located near the Banwell River. Most likely it was used from Roman times to the 4th century. Gout House Farm was occupied from the 11th to 14th centuries, and one of the locations where they have found remains. Changes to the land suggest that they were originally made during Roman times.

In 1842 Beard’s Stone, located in Cave’s Wood, was set up to mark the burial site of an ancient human skeleton found in a cave near Bishop’s Cottage. William Beard was an amateur archeologist and responsible for seeing the reinterment of the body and marking the site with a plaque containing a poetic inscription.

Banwell Castle was built in 1847 by John Dyer Simpson, who worked as a solicitor in London. The Castle is now a listed building and contains a restaurant and hotel.

The village church is the Church of St. Andrew, and was built in the 15th century. It’s a protected building. Notable additions were made in the 12 century—a font—and in the 15th century—a carved stone pulpit. The church has a thirty metre high bell tower that contains ten bells. These bells have been made from the 18th to 20th centuries.

The Domesday book lists three mills that were likely fed by a spring, but no one today knows where they might have been located.

The parish council is responsible for the upkeep of playing fields, playground, drainage, footpaths, and the conservation of trees and listed buildings.

The Festival of Ages is held in Banwell and celebrates the wide range of ages in town. It shows how the different ages can work together to strike down barriers and have fun. This event has music, dance, fashion, and art.
