HISTORY

The name Abronhill comes from the 17th century. The area was named Abraham the Hebrew's Hill by the Covenanters during the English Civil War. This name, however, was corrupted into Abronhill.

Farms such as Whitelees, Glenhead, Low Abronhill and High Abronhill occupied the land that is now Abronhill until the 60s and 70s. The farms were developed from the Fleming estate with the Flemings being the ruling family in the area. They lived in Cumbernauld Castle which they acquired after Robert the Bruce killed Red Comyn, the previous laird.

Local lords, as well as the royalty of Scotland, came to the forest around Cumbernauld to hunt deer and mysterious wild “white cattle.” Mary, Queen of Scots has also stayed at the castle and planted a yew tree at Castlecary.

There are four original Abronhill cottages in the area. They were built before the new town and were meant for workers of the nearby farms. They can be found on the old Slamannan Road, which is now Broom Road. There are also cottages located close to Cumbernauld Glen, which is en route to the DooCot, a historical site of interest.

Whether you want to see these structures or have a look at the suburb itself, you can stay at a nearby accommodation so you have a place to rest after a day of activities. If you want to make it a romantic affair, don't forget to buy flowers in Abronhill to present to your date. If you can't, there's always the option to send flowers to Abronhill.
