History

The town of Sprowston may have been founded after the Danes invaded in the 9th century. This is evidenced by the town’s name where Sprow is a personal name of Scandinavian origin. Also, “ton” refers to town or village.

Sprowston is mentioned in the Domesday Book comprised of two holdings (later known as manors). In 1186, the Mounteney family held one of the manors for Sir Richard de Luci; the other was held by a succession of de Sproustons then Aslakes for the Bishop of Norwich.

The year 1545 saw the Mounteney Manor granted to John Corbet by the Jermy family. A few years later, the house was broken into and looted during Kett’s rebellion. The camp of the rebellion was located on Mousehold Heath which is situated nearby.

A family belonging to the Norfolk gentry, the Calthorpes – related to Anne Boleyn’s family by marriage – owned the Aslakes Manor which was then passed to Sir Thomas Corbet, owner of the Mounteney manor.

Both the Aslakes and Mounteney manor combined as one by the 16th century. The combined manor was sold to a governor of the South Sea Company called Sir Lambert Blackwell in the 18th century. A number of families owned the manor during the 19th century until it came to the Gurney family.

Attractions

St Mary and St Margaret Church. This is Sprowston’s ancient parish church, and is also one of the biggest in Norfolk. There are monuments to the Corbet family here. The family were Royalists during the Civil War with Thomas Corbet receiving knighthood from Charles I. Miles Corbet, Sir Thomas’ uncle, on the other hand, was a Member of Parliament and was one of the signatories on Charles I’s death warrant; he was executed when Charles II ascended the throne.

Sprowston Hall. First built in 1560, it now serves as a hotel. It was rebuilt by John Gurney in 1876. The Sprowston Manor Golf Club is also located here.
