North Walsham is a market town and parish located in Norfolk county. Over 12,600 people live here. It’s on the eastern side of England, located in North Norfolk and consists of twenty-nine square metres of land. It’s to the south of Cromer and north of Wroxham. It’s about twenty-four kilometres from Norwich city.
To get into town a commuter can take the Bittern line to the town’s railway station. This line runs between Norwich, Cromer, and Sheringham. Drivers can take the A149 into town or the B1145.
The town is located on the North Walsham and Diham Canal. This canal is privately owned by the North Walsham Canal company. The canal flows from Antingham Mill to Honing, and follows the River Ant.
The town was originally the site of an Anglo Saxon settlement. This region was prosperous in the 12th century. The main industry was from weaving, and many weavers came from Flanders, a region of Belgium. This is where two popular textile names came into being. The word Walsham is the name of a light-weight cotton, suitable for summer wear, and Worsted is the name of a heavier cloth, suitable for winter. These wool mills thrived into the 14th century, and the mill owners became prosperous as a result.
On June 25, 1600, the town experienced a terrible fire. The Great Fire began at the Dowle household. Over one hundred and eighteen homes were destroyed, seventy shops, the market cross, and many market stalls. The church caught on fire but it was left mostly unharmed. This is where people stayed while the town was rebuilt.
The town’s church is St. Nicholas. The front of the church has a tower that is now in ruins. All of two sides are missing, and the roof. It had originally been the second tallest steeple in Norfolk, but it collapsed in 1724 and was never replaced. The ruined tower of this church is a landmark that can be seen for miles away.
There are many notable relics within the church. The tomb of Sir William Paston can be found here, as well as remains of old medieval screens, a Gothic font canopy, an iron chest, and other artifacts.
Once a year the North Walsham Festival occurs in June for one week. There are many community events highlighted, as well as a parade and a fun day. There are art exhibitions and workshops for all ages to enjoy. Normally there is a theme, with the Peasant’s Revolt of 1381 and the Battle of North Walsham.
During this medieval age, the black plague caused a labour shortage and higher wages. Efforts to control wages, with many other factors, eventually led to the battle fought in 1381, whereupon the peasants lost.
