Flower Delivery to Great Fransham – A Village in Norfolk

The village of Great Fransham in Norfolk is about an equal distance between Swaffam and Dereham. Given this is a “greater” Fransham, there is also a Little Fransham and both are located in the civil parish of Fransham.

HISTORY

Farmers have exploited the medium clay soils of the Farnsham area since the Neolithic period. Archaeological evidence also shows that human activity continued on until the Bronze and Iron Age.

The area was renamed Fransham after 450 AD by the Anglo-Saxons with “ham” indicating a place of importance. The land that was constantly cultivated during the Roman times is now Great Fransham.

The two Franshams were established around 900 AD. The Domesday Book also lists three manors in Fransham, with land of the two manors beloning to Great Fransham and held by Willia de Warenne, the builder of Castle Acre Castle.

A century later, residents abandoned the Franshams and moved to small hamlets, farmsteads and cottages located around the parish. The number of inhabitants declined following the Black Death of 1349 and several plagues.

In 1925, the ecclesiastical parishes of Great and Little Fransham were joined together. The Great Fransham manor house's site was relocated in the 1980's by an archaeological survey. Only medieval building rubble and potter fragments mark the spot where it used to stand.

The manor was occupied by Sir Geoffrey Fransham until his death in 1414. Since he had no children, his manor was  divided among his five sisters. One part of the manor was occupied by Crudd's Hall in Great Fransham which was eventually demolished in the 1930s.

Both Franshams were amalgamated in 1935.
