Flower Delivery to Middlesex with Clare Florist
Middlesex is a county of England, located in the mid-southern region of the country. Its name is commonly abbreviated as Middx. Today, it happens to be a suburb of London, but does have small sections that are surrounded by neighbouring counties. Middlesex was set up with an Anglo-Saxon system that existed until 1965. This land stretches from the River Thames to west of the City of London. Much of the country is low-lying and composed of clay.
The word Middlesex means the “middle Saxons" which was the tribe of the original inhabitants of the region. The word formed from middel which is Old English for middle, and Seaxe, which comprised the regions of Essex, Sussex, and Wessex. A record has been found from the 8th century spelling the name as Middleseaxon, and as Middleseaxan in 704. The word seax actually means a type of knife that the Saxons once used. This name has had longterm symbolism with many other regions in England.
There are many parishes and settlements in Middlesex, including Edmonton, Elthorne, Gore, Isleworth, Ossultstone, and Spelthorne.
It’s believed that Middlesex was first settled thousands of years ago. It was originally part of the Kingdom of Essex. It has a record in the Domesday book as being divided into six other hundreds.
There used to be an Earl of Middlesex in 1622, then in 1677, but the title is extinct today. The economy of Middlesex has always been reliant on London since early times. Most of the economy was sourced from agriculture. The county grew crops, including grain and hay, and provided livestock and building materials from the forests.
Much of the local employment came from tourism, coaching, inn-keeping, and market shops and stalls. During the 18th century, major parts of the county became residential.
Middlesex never really had a county town such as other counties in England did. Mostly, it was reliant on London for its main county town. Up until 1889, the High Sheriff was even chosen by the City of London Corporation.
For people who love gardening, there are a few shows of interest each year in Middlesex. In April, the Spring Gardening Show is held at Capel Manor in Enfield. In July is the Fuchsia Festival, also held at Capel Manor.
The Syon Monstery was located on the northern bank of the River Thames from 1415 until its demolition in the 16th century. It’s close to the Georgian mansion of Syon House, which was named after Zion, the city of David. Syon House is located on 80 hectares of land near west London. Today, it belongs to the Duke of Northumberland and his family.
