Trelewis is located in the Merthyr Tydfil county of Wales. It’s on the Taff Bargoed Valley, in the southeastern portion of the country. It’s an old mining village. Up until 1974 it was a part of the Gelligaer Urban District Council portion of Glamorgan county. Trelewis is less than half a kilometre from Nelson, and also a short drive to Bedlinog, Pontypridd, and Caerphilly.
The name Trelewis means “Lewis’s Town”. It was named after William Lewis from Bontnewydd. It was the first farm that was built on the site where Trelewis is currently standing. Lewis has been honoured by a plaque that resides at the Gelligaer Parish Church. Here it says, “In Memory of William Lewis, founder of Trelewis”.
Bontnewydd was the original name of the district where Trelewis is now. Bontnewydd means “new bridge”. The Bontnewydd Hotel was built in 1886, and is still standing. This district was popularly called “Stormtown”, due to it situation on an exposed hillside.
The Taff Bargoed River passes through Taff Bargoed Valley. The A4740 will bring travellers to this region for sightseeing. It’s only twenty-two kilometres from Cardiff. There are three counties that meet in Taff Bargoed, including where Trelewis is located.
Around the early 1800s there were mainly farms located in this region. Soon coal mining became the region’s most supportive industry. Through the Industrial Revolution, the Deep Navigation Colliery, Merthyr Colliery, and Trewlewis Drift Mine were the three primary locations mined. The families of the region relied on the mines as a source of income. With the money from the industry, transport links were improved, including bridges, and roads.
The Company Union was noted for fighting for their rights in the 1930s, and when protesters were released from prison, they were celebrated as heroes.
The last of the coal mines closed in the 1980s. Today, the valley is a sanctuary for many species of wildlife, notably red kites and otters.
Visitors and locals may also visit the Parc Taf Bargoed. The Trim Trail and other heritage walks provide many chances to get out for fresh air. There are also football and rugby facilities. The Trelewis Welfare FC is the town’s team. The Taff Bargoed anglers fish in the lake. The Aberfan Canoe Club rows through the weir pools. Here they play canoe polo and canoe slalom. There is also an outdoor bowls club called the Trelewis Welfare Outdoors Bowls, started in 1932.
The town of Trelewis is governed by the Bedlinog Community Council. It also has its own electoral area (with Bedlinog), in their county. There are no passenger trains into town, but they do have a freight-only Taff Bargoed branch that runs through the town. Since the town no longer mines coal, the railway line brings coal in from Ffos-y-fran. The railway runs from north of the town from Bedlinog, and down through Nelson to the south.
