Flower Delivery to Wallasey by Clare Florist

Wallasey is located within the Metropolitan Borough of Wirral in Merseyside, England. It sits right at the mouth of the River Mersey at the northeastern corner of the Wirral Peninsula.

The name Wallasey originated from the Germanic word “Walha” which means “foreigner” or “stranger.” In fact, it is also the origin of the name Wales. The -ey suffix indicates an island or area of dry land. Originally, the higher ground that is now occupied by Wallasey was separate from the rest of Wirral by a creek known as Wallasey Pool, the marshy areas of Bidston Moss and Leasowe, and sand dunes along the coast.

The area was sparsely populated before the 19th century. Horse races were organised on the sands at Leasowe during the 16th and 17th centuries by the Earls of Derby. It is said to be the forerunner of the modern day derby.

The main activities in Wallasey was farming and fishing. By the early 19th century, affluent merchants from Liverpool found the shoreline between Seacombe and Rock Point an attractive place to retire. Around this time, development began around Egremont and increased thanks to the introduction of steam ferries across the river.

The later part of the 19th century saw New Brighton develop into a popular seaside resort serving the industrial towns of Liverpool and Lancashire. The pace of housing development increased due to the opening of the Mersey Railway.

Wallasey is comprised of several distinct districts, namely:

Liscard – This is where the main shopping area is located. The largest park in town, Central Park is located here.

Wallasey Village – Contains a mixture of 20th century semi-detached and detached housing. It also has a shopping street with with a display of Wallasey flowers in the centre. The old tower of St Hilary's Church that burned down in 1857 still remains.

New Brighton – Popular for walks, as well as beach and other leisure activities. It is home to the Floral Pavilion and Vale Park.

Poulton – Mainly an industrial and terraced housing area.

Egremont – Turned into an affluent residential area during the early 19th century.

Seacombe – Best known for its Mersey Ferry terminal with regular boats heading to Pier Head in Liverpool and Woodside in Birkenhead. St Paul's Church is a local landmark.

Parks & Open Spaces

Vale Park – This is a park located in New Brighton and is a place where a variety of events are held throughout the summer. Everything from a traditional children's show to folk and brass band concerts are held here.

Central Park – This is the largest park in Wallasey. There are two areas for young children that are equipped with slides and other games. The area also features large green areas as well as a very popular walled garden. The rose gardens are also worth a visit if you want to see flowers in Wallasey.

Wirral also has over 1,500 hectares of other public open spaces where you can go for a romantic walk with your special someone. You can even make the day extra special if you send flowers to Wallasey to surprise your loved one.
