Flower Delivery to Norton-Juxta-Twycross

The village of Norton Juxta Twycross has a very long name, so it’s often called “Norton”. It’s a small village located in the county of Leicestershire, in the eastern midlands region of England. The village forms part of the Appleby Magna parish.

The word Norton comes from Anglo-Saxon words meaning “north town”. Like many other villages, it has had a variety of spellings, including Northton and Nortone. In the 17th century it was called Hoggs Norton. Apparently there were many other villages in the region called Norton, hence the Norton Juxta Twycross modern naming. The word “juxta” is Latin for “near”. The Twycross part of the name encompasses the village of that name in the region.

The village has a long history. It’s believed to have been founded in the 8th or 9th centuries by the Anglo-Saxons. King Aethelred granted a charter to the village in 951, and the name was spelled with the Northton spelling.

By 1086, the town was named as Norton in the Domesday book. From 1066 to 1086, the Lord of the Manor was Countess Lady Godiva. She is famous for riding around naked on her horse in the streets of Coventry. In the book the village has a worth of £0.3, and only four households. The village held a large taxable value of six geld units. At the time of the census, there were one villager, two small holders, and a priest living in the town. Eight acres of meadows were noted.

In 1325, the murder of Sir William de Monte Gomeri occurred near Merevale Abbey. His wife accused several people of plotting to murder her husband. Two of them were acquitted, with two fleeing the area.

The Holy Trinity Church has a long history. There is an illustration that remains, showing its spire, but that was taken down shortly after 1791. The first church was built of wood in the 12th century. The building that remains today was built in the 14th century, with a major restoration in 1841. The church has five bells, with the latest installed in 1849.

There have been many rectories over the years. The Norton rectory was built in 1850. This eventually became a private residence and was called Norton Grange. In 1963, the building and over twelve acres of private gardens were purchased by zoologist Molly Badham for £12,000. The Holy Trinity Church has kept records of rectors from 1329 to 1918.

She eventually went on to converting the grounds to the Twycross Zoo. Molly trained chimps to appear on TV. They’re most famous for the PG Tips Tea ads in the 60s to 80s. Molly passed away in October 2007.
