Flower Delivery to Glenfield with Clare Florist

Glenfield is a small village of over 9600 residents in the county of Leicestershire, England. It’s also a civil parish named Glenfields, and is located in the Blaby district. It’s a suburb of Leicestershire, but is administered separately. In the past, Glenfields formed when they merged an ancient Glenfield parish with Glenfield Frith. The village is located to the west of Leicestershire and travellers can take the Junction 21A part of the M1 motorway to reach it. There is a Glenfield Hospital, but it’s technically on the Leicestershire side and not in Glenfield village.

St. Peters Church is located in the Square, which is the centre of the village. On this site are also the ruins of the original church named Rector, which was of Norman design. Some engraved drawings of the original church still remain. This church had a small bell tower. It also had a hagioscope—leper squint—where people with leprosy could view the services through a tiny window, without actually entering the church. The new church was built in 1877, and some aspects of the old church have been installed in the new. There is currently no public access allowed to see the inside of the Rector ruins.

There is also a library, post office, and the Methodist Church in the centre of the village. Even though the village is mainly residential, there are still many amenities in town, including shops, a Memorial Hall, playground and schools. The Square used to be mainly a road surrounded by shops, but most of these were demolished up to the 1960s, so the roundabout could be built.

Glenfield has a mention in the Domesday Book of 1086. Back then it had twelve households, and was part of Guthlaxton Hundred, an administrative division.

In 1832 the first railway station opened. It brought commuters in from the Leicestershire and Swannington Railway line. It was the world’s third steam railway. Right before the station is the Glenfield tunnel, which was built by Robert Stephenson. It was nearly two kilometres long. Most of it has been filled in today, though you can still see the entrance of the tunnel.

The village experienced great growth in the 1920s, and then again in the 1950s. The Faire Estate was built in the 1950s. In the 1990s a large estate was built behind Ellis Park. The Mill Lane Industrial Estate provides many jobs to the locals.

There are many outdoor spaces for recreational activities in Glenfield. There is Ellis Park, Station Park, and the Playing Fields. There is also the Millennium Green which is protected by a local trust. The Gynsills Nature Reserve is also a protected habitat for plants and wildlife, and is located at the crossing of Gynsill Lane and Stelle Way. Here you can see older trees and a pond. It was previously a portion of the Gynsills Estate, but now is used to promote biodiversity as a nature conservation area.
