HISTORY
It is believed that Appleby Parva used to be a Danish settlement while Appleby Magna, on the other hand, was largely Saxon. The hamlet used to be referred to as Overtown.
Appleby Parva is most remembered for the number of buildings that line Atherstone Road, including:
Moore Arms – also called Moores' Arms. It is now called the Appleby Inn.
Rose Cottage – a shoemaker's house.
Doctor's House – a Georgian style structure that is quite visible from many points in the village making it one of the most prized views in Appleby Parva.
The name of the village is derived from the combination of “apa” meaning water or stream and “by” meaning settlement.
In the Domesday Book, Appleby appears three times with Appleby Magna – listed as Aplebi and Apleby – and Appleby Parva – listed as Aplebrie) listed separately.
Appleby Magna is listed as partly in Derbyshire and Leicestershire while Appleby Parva is in Leicestershire. That said, both have been part of Leicestershire since 1897.
The village was under the lordship of Robert de Ferrers, 1st Earl of Derby, in the Domesday Book.
There wasn't much development in the village before the Norman Invasion of 1066. However, it began to be properly developed under Lord Ferrars after 1066.

Other than the three properties listed above, another structure of interest in the village is the so-called octagonal house. It is located behind the old Anchor Inn. It remains a private house and is referred to as the “round house.”
