Flower Delivery to West Hythe with Clare Florist
West Hythe is a small settlement on the southeastern coast of England, near the English channel. It’s located in the county of Kent, and has a population of under 100 people, so it’s officially considered a hamlet. It’s close to Hythe, a town on the sea with a port, and Palmarsh, a rural community, located southeast of West Hythe.
The small village is located on a plain, with the modern buildings located to the south of Royal Military Canal. The Royal Military Canal was built from 1805 to 1809 as a defensive tactic against Napolean’s army from France. It’s forty-five kilometres long, but was fortunately never needed for defense. Today, it’s a listed monument. The canal plays a purpose in providing a drainage system for the surrounding marshes, and is a haven for plant and wildlife. Today, organized walks along the Royal Military Canal are quite popular.
West Hythe had a parish church in the past named St. Mary’s Church, but it’s in ruins today. The closest church still in use is St. Leonard’s Church in Hythe. Little more remains of St. Mary’s Church than one large stone wall, with smaller ruins behind. The church stood at the base of an escarpment, north to the Royal Military Canal. The church was located on the plain where most of the ancient village was once located.
The church ruins are listed as a Grade II monument at English Heritage. St. Mary’s was originally built in the 12th century, and then extensively rebuilt in the 14th century. The church suffered from a terrible fire in 1620, and it’s remarkable that any ruins remain at all today. St. Mary’s may have been a monastery church at an earlier point in time. No replacement was ever rebuilt.
Most of modern West Hythe is located on land to the west of Hythe. It’s mostly residential, but there are a few shops. The A259 road runs along the coast and is the best way to the village from Hythe and Palmarsh. There is very little demarcation between West Hythe and Hythe today, due to growth.
Visitors to town may take the Dymchurch Light Railway tour of the region, when it operates seasonally. It’s a one third scale of an actual railroad. There are third scale steam engines and diesel engine trains. The tours take people around Romney Marsh. There is also a performing troupe in town, the Hythe Festival Company, which provides entertainment for fairs and festivals in the summer time.
