HISTORY

Once called Warne, the parish and manor of Warden was controlled by the Manor of Milton at the time of the Domesday Book. During the reign of King Edward I of England, the Savage family owned the manor.

John le Savage got a charter of free-warren for lands in the manor in 1925. Sir Richard at Leese (MP) took ownership in 1376 and he was Sheriff of Kent in 1367. When Richard at Leese died in 1934, the manor passed to his widow, Dionisia.

In 1727, the manor was sold to Sir Thomas Stevens, who was a High Sheriff of Surrey in 1726. When he dies, Thomas West (his son) inherited it. James West, husband of Thomas West's sister Sarah, soon took ownership.
