Flower Delivery to Hildenborough with Clare Florist
Hildenborough is part of the Tonbridge and Malling borough in Kent. It lies in the River Medway valley in an area called The Weald. It is a commuter village, as most businesses and residents have moved to Tonbridge or other neighbouring villages for better commercial and work opportunities. But it still remains a tight-knit community, full of village activities, where villagers will always say hi and help one another without hesitation. The area is also surrounded by a designated Green Belt, so the environment is very pretty, welcoming, and family-friendly.
History
The name of the village is derived from the Old English “hilden', which means a clearing at the bottom of a hill. 'Borough' is believed to have been added later, most likely when the Hilden Manor was built.
The parish consisted of separate manors and their domains in the medieval period. In the 16th century, the Tonbridge Road was an important route from London to the coast, and Hildenborough was a place where travellers could drop by to get some food and fresh horses. At that time, it was little more than a hamlet, even when the first turnpike opened in 1709 and regular mail coaches were established in 1784.
It was already in the 19th century when most of the buildings and developments happened within the area. But it was after the Second World War that rapid expansion truly began. Housing projects boomed in the mid 1990s and the village expanded to the edges of the north and south on either side of Tonbridge Road. Today, the form of the village remains pretty much the same as it was in the 1960s.
Attractions
There are plenty of houses around the parish that were built in the earlier periods of the 1990s or the late 19th century. Most still retain their original architecture, so if you're interested in era houses, you can walk around the village and admire these buildings. There is also the Mountains Country House, a lovely Grade II listed Victorian house that is now a popular events venue. It was purchased by JH Johnson and he lived on the estate from 1827 to 1900. The existing farmhouse was demolished, and in 1866 Mountains was built. It became a doctor's house and surgery in the 1950s and you can still see the bell panel in the hall corridor showing the surgery.
The green surrounding Hildenborough does not only add to the beauty of its environment; it has also blessed the village with spaces that are perfect for playing golf. There is Hilden Park, a parkland with 9 holes and fairways lined with trees. It is a child-friendly course and allows for a relaxed dress code. There is also the Nizels Golf and Country Club where you can practise your swing on a beautiful championship course with 18 holes. The shady fairways also give you an unobstructed view of the countryside. There is also a spa where you can relax and get pampered.
Hildenborough makes a nice stop for a romantic and relaxing weekend getaway.
