Flower Delivery to Frindsbury with Clare Florist
Frindsbury is a civil parish in Southern England. It lies on the northwest banks of the River Medway (on the opposite side of Rochester) and is a part of Kent's Medway Towns conurbation. Frindsbury started as an agricultural area but, as years passed, it evolved into an industrial centre and finally into the suburb it has become today. The name “Frindsbury” comes from an Old English word “freodesburh”, which translates to “a stronghold that's held by a friend”.
Frindsbury's Past
Historians believe that Frindsbury has a rich history that dates back to 100,000 B.C. There are evidences of life in the area even during the paleolithic era and the Bronze Age, and some experts believe that a Roman villa had been once built in the parish.
During the Middle Ages, the parish was passed from one owner to another. Its first recorded owner was the Bishop Eardulf of Rochester but, after the Danish wars, the area fell into the hands of the Anglo-Saxon king Harold Godwinson. It was handed over to William the Conqueror after the Battle of Hastings but was eventually given to Bishop Gundulf of Rochester. Gundulf, in turn, donated Frindsbury to the Benedictine Priory of St Andrew in Rochester.
From the beginning until the early parts of the 1800s, the people in Frindsbury worked in agriculture. This changed as they were introduced to the world of manufacturing and quarrying until, in 1831, around 90 percent of the residents had industrial jobs. Later on, the land in Frindsbury was committed to housing, turning it into the suburb it is today.
