Flower Delivery to Llanfechell with Clare Florist
Llanfechell is a village located in the Anglesey area of northern Wales, in the county of Gwynedd. It makes up the Mechell Community Council area, and happens to be the largest of the villages located here. Closest towns are Holyhead to the east, and Amlwch to the north.
Llanfechell is a word that is comprised of “Llan” meaning church, and the Saint Mechell, in Welsh. During the 2001 census, it was noted that there were 1500 people living here. Even though the village is small, it still has a church, one primary school, two chapels, and a pub. A large portion of its lands are used for agriculture.
Notably landmarks in Llanfechell include a windmill, and a watermill. There are also many prehistoric monuments scattered about the region, indicating that people have lived here for thousands of years.
The first mention of Llanfechell has been recorded in a document from 1291. Back then, the M in Mechell was pronounced as a V. St. Mechell was a missionary from the 6th century, and possibly from Brittany. He founded a monastery in this village. In a 17th century manuscript, a poem was written about how St. Mechell was granted this land in exchange for miraculously healing a villager. The route was to be determined by releasing a hare. According to the poem, the hare was influenced by divine guidance and marked out what is now the parish of Llanfechell, where the monastery was founded.
St. Mechell’s Church was originally built in the 12th century, and has gone through many upgrades since then. A few features still remain, and the building is protected by the heritage site. It’s believed that St. Mechell was buried somewhere on the church grounds. The church still holds bilingual services every Sunday.
18th century life for the villagers has been written in depth by William Bulkeley, from 1734 to 1760. He had a diary where he recorded the details of daily life, social customs, dealings with family and friends, what the weather was like, and agricultural practices.
Llanfechell was on the network of market towns in Anglessey. The village held a weekly market day, as well as fairs throughout the year, where livestock and fresh produce were sold.
Llanfechell continues to be a popular location for markets and livestock fairs. Residents from all around come to shop for fresh produce and flowers. The Llanfechell Fair, or Ffair Mechell in Welsh, are more for fun and selling of produce and crafts today, then for selling livestock and other agricultural items. It’s held at the Llanfechell Community School during July. They also hold a horticultural show and family fun days during this time.
