Flower Delivery to Llanfaes, a Small Village in Wales
Llanfaes is a small village located on the eastern part of the Isle of Anglesey in Wales, near the entrance to the Menai Strait (which separates the island from mainland Wales). The village's original name was “Llan Ffagan Fach”, which translates to “Church or Monastery of Fagan the Little” but, over time, it was changed to its present name, which means “Church or Monastery in the Meadow”.
It's important to note that there's another village in Glamorgan that used to be called Llanfaes, although its official name is now Llanmaes. Interestingly, Llanfaes in Anglesey used to be called Llanmaes. The name “Llanfaes” is believed to have come from the word “mes”, which is the Welsh word for “acorn”.
Llanfaes: Looking Back in Time
Llanfaes was the capital of the medieval kingdom of Gwynedd. It was the site of several battles, such as the Battle of Llanmaes (which happened when the area was invaded by foreigners) and the Battle of Anglesey Sound (during which Normans fought against the Norwegian king).
Llanfaes prospered during the 12th and 13th centuries and became a trading centre; it was said that around 70 percent of Gwynedd's tariff revenue during that time came from the sale of goods in the village. A Franciscan monastery was built in the area by Llywelyn the Great, who buried his wife Joan in Llanfaes. However, the village suffered when Edward I defeated Prince Madog ap Llywelyn. The king constructed a new castle in Beaumaris and moved Llanfaes residents to Rhosyr, and Llanfaes's trading connections were transferred to Beaumaris.
Llanfaes experienced some development over the years. The Hampton and the Bulkeley families, who owned the majority of the land in the village, built their homes (Henllys Hall and Baron Hill, respectively) and approved the construction of new roads. The former Franciscan friary was developed by the Whyte and Bulkeley families into a cluster of buildings known as Fryars, while farms and single-storey cottages sprouted from the 1600s to the 1800s.
