History

The name Kyleakin is derived from “Strait of Haakon”, which was named after the King Haakon IV of Norway whose fleet docked here before engaging in the 1263 Battle of Largs that concluded with the Norwegians ruling the island. In the early 19th century, Lord Macdonald conceptualised a plan to develop Kyleakin and re-christened it “New Liverpool”, with a contemporary print showing rows of tenement buildings, but this was never realised.

The village is also the site of Castle Moil, which is now a ruined fortress, constructed in the late 15th century and was told to be built for a Norwegian Princess who would charge a toll to any boat using the narrow channel. While her remains are said to buried on the top of large mountain to the rear of the ruins, this was contested by some local historians who stated that she was laid to rest in another mountain of similar name a few miles north in the village of Broadford.
