HISTORY

Called Cill Chuimen in Gaelic, the town was known as Kiliwhimin until the 18th century. It was called Fort Augustus after the Jacobite Rising of 1715. Suggestions regarding to the history claim are plenty. On one hand, it's said to be called as such after Saint Cummein of Iona who built a church in the area. On the other, it was called Ku Chuimein after one of the abbots of Iona who was from the Comyn clan. Another is that it was called Cill a'Chumein after the last Comyn in Lochaber.

A fort was built by General Wade after the Jacobite Rising and it was named after the Duke of Cumberland. The fort was captured by the Jacobites in April 1745, just before the Battle of Culloden.

The fort was sold to the Lovat family in 1867. In 1876, the family passed on the site and land to the Benedictine order. The monks then established Fort Augustus Abbey. However, they abandoned the site in 1998 after many failures to maintain the buildings built on the site.

The ownership reverted to the Lovat family who sold it to Terry Nutkins.
