Flower Delivery to Blarmachfoldach with Clare Florist

Blarmacfoldach is a small farming village in the Scottish Highlands. It is located in the Mamore Hills region between Kinlochleven and Fort William. The Mamores are a 15 km long east-west ridge of the Grampian Mountains between Glen Nevis to the north and Loch Leven to the south.

Hill walkers love the region because the area offers both easy and challenging walks as well as access to some scenic peaks in the Highland regions.  The river Cìochnis passes through Blarmacfoldach and brought the first electric streetlights in nearby Fort William.

Fort William is the second largest town in the Scottish Highlands, with a population of nearly 10,000. It is a major tourist centre, thanks to the access to hill climbing and mountain biking trails. It is the start and end of the West Highland Way and the Great Glen Way trails. Originally just a settlement, a fort was constructed here to control the local population after Oliver Cromwell invaded during the English Civil War. The fort was also used to suppress the Jacobite uprisings in the 18th century. In WWII, Ft. Williams was a training base for the Royal Navy Coastal Forces. Today it is home to the West Highland Museum on the High Street.

The West Highland Way is a long distance route running 95 miles through the Highlands to Milngavie near Glasgow. It is also one of the ends of the Great Glen Way, which runs between Fort William and Inverness.  Fort William lies near the head of Loch Linnhe, one of the longest sea lochs in Scotland. It is beside the mouths of the rivers Nevis and Lochy, which join in the intertidal zone, briefly becoming one river before discharging into the sea.

Fort William holds the annual Fort William Mountain Festival to celebrate the mountains and the culture of the Highlands, the importance of walking and climbing tourism to the local area. Nearly 85,000 people use the West Highland Way every year, as it follows ancient drover’s roads, military paths and coach roads through the Highlands. Blarmachfoldach was one of the last local places in the Highlands to celebrate the traditional Highland New Year on January 12.

Blarmacfoldach is traditionally a Clan Cameron settlement.  Clan Cameron may have descended from a son of the royal family of Denmark who helped restore King Feargus II of Scotland. Another source claims the origin of Clan Cameron is that Donal Dubh, first chief of Clan Cameron, descended from the Macgillonies or the medieval family of Cameron of Ballegarno in Fife.

Regardless, Clan Cameron fought for Robert the Bruce during the Wars of Scottish Independence and against the English at the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314. Clan Cameron was involved in a feud with Clan Mackintosh that lasted for over 300 years that began sometime in the mid 1300s. Clan Cameron also played a role opposing Oliver Cromwell in the Royalist rising of 1651 to 1654.

Clan Cameron ended their feud with Clan Mackintosh in approximately 1665 after the Stand-Off at the Fords of Arkraig. Clan Cameron supported the Jacobite cause in 1689 and again in 1715 and 1745.  After the last Jacobite attempt, Clan Cameron’s lands were forfeited to the government. In 1784, it was returned to Donald Cameron, 22nd chief of Clan Cameron, who was only 15. It was managed by a trust until 1819 when Donald took control.

The first clearance of the clans began in 1801 at Clunes. Emigrations of the clans to Canada and other countries began in 1802. The clearances continued once Donald, chief of clan, took control in 1819. Many Camerons around the world trace their origins to these people cleared from their traditional lands during this period of Scottish history.

During WWI, the XXV Chief of Clan Cameron raised four battalions of Cameron Highlanders, and in 1934, he was appointed a Knight of the Thistle. His son, the famous Sir Donald Hamish Cameron also received this honour in 1973.  In WWII, the Cameron Highlanders were the last battalions that wore the kilt into battle. Their commanding officers purposefully delayed orders to give up the kilt, and successfully repelled a surprise German attack. For these tactics, the Cameron battalions earned the nickname “Ladies from Hell.”
