HISTORY

Archaeological findings from the fields between East and West Worldham show that the area was inhabited ans visited since at least the Paleolithic era. On the summit of King John's Hill, which is to the east of East Worldham, lies an Iron Age hillfort that dates back to 100 BC. A road that leads from Chichester to Silchester and passes below a hill which is now Green Street and Pookles Lane was built by the Romans.

The first mention of West Worldham as a village is in a document dated October 1277. Richard de Annecy granted the church of St Nicholas of Worldeham to Hamble Priory in the late 12th century.

The village was a noted hunting ground during the medieval period. A private deer park and hunting lodge was built by the descendants of Geoffrey de Venuz nearby.

Winchester College maintained ownership of the parish until the early 20th century.

LANDSCAPE


Dominated by farmland and several woods, including Hamble Pits Copse, Wild Duck Copse, Little Wood Copse, Warner's Wood and Pheasant Wood. Rich and dry meadows and greensand also surround the place.
