It is part of the civil parish of Mapledurwell and Up Nately and of the Basing ward of Basingstoke and Deane borough council, which is a non-metropolitan district of the Hampshire County Council. Today, it is regarded as a “working” village with active farms and smallholdings.
Even though the village is small, it offers scenic places that are perfect for a relaxing holiday. And to make the experience more special and memorable for you and your partner, do not forget to order flowers for delivery to Mapledurwell with a trusted florist.
History
Mapledurwell is recorded in the Domesday Book and was held by the Anschill for Edward the Confessor. The village became the sole Hampshire estate of Hugh de Port in 1086, which covers Kent, Newnham, Andwell and Up Nately parishes. In 1172, it was forfeited by Adam de Port after the King gave the manor to Alan Basset and, in 1306, was transferred to Hugh de Despenser, who was executed by hanging in 1326. However, it was returned to the Despenser family in 1337 and remained in their possession for 200 years until William Frost of Avington granted it to the Corpus Christi College in Oxford, which remained the major land owner until 1839.
The college’s long period of ownership allowed for the continuation of small tenant-farm holdings, hence its farmlands’ late enclosure, and the retention of an open land setting and an older “winding” road layout.
The land was eventually awarded to the village under and Enclosure Act of June 1863. Since then, industrial jobs have been sprouting in the area thanks to the opening of the Basingstoke Canal and the expansion of the nearby brickworks.
