Flower Delivery to Dibden by Clare Florist

Dibden is a village located in Hampshire, England and dates back to the middle Ages. Around it are the well known settlements of Hythe and Dibden Purley. Dibden lies on the eastern edge of new forest within a valley that runs into Southampton waters. Dibden derived its name from the Old English for 'deep valley". However the village is just some few feet below those around it. It was once held by Odo of Winchester and listed as "Dependene" in the Domesday Book of 1086.

In the 12th century, the overlordship of Dibden belonged to Reynold de St. Valery. After his death in 1166, there was another lord known as lord Bernard of Dibden in 1167 who was killed at the seige of Acon in 1190 . He was believed to be the son of Reynold de St. Valery, Bernard de St. Valery. It later fell from the St Vallery lineage to the crown when it was given to Richard 1st of Cornwall.  It was held in the reign of Henry VII of Arthur and even the Prince of Wales.

It was split in the early 12th century into three parts. A third of the manor was given to Edmund and Osbert de Dibden.  Another third given to Nicholas de Dibden. While, the Dibdens held their own portion of the estate which passed through the family of Richard Waller before it was sold to the Lord of the other two manors in Dipden in 1594.

The three estates were later united after 1954. It was left to Rachael, wife of Sir John Croke of Chilton by William Webbe as she was his only daughter and heir. It was owned by the Harris family throughout the 18th century. It passed out from their hands in the 19th century and sold to the Romsey Charity Commisioners in 1862.  The church of all saints was built around 1921, but destroyed in an air raid in 1940. It was restored and reopened 15 years later. The Parish of Dibden was created in 1894 and the Fawley parish from the village of Hythe was added to the parish in 1913. The population of Hythe and Dibden Purlieu villages have grown tremendously ever since. The parish was renamed to Hyde and Dibden in 1983.
