Denmead is a village located in the county of Hampshire. It’s located in the district of Winchester, in the south central portion of England. In 2005, there were over 6457 residents living here. Denmead is closest to Waterlooville, only three kilometres away.
The prehistoric lands of Denmead were covered with woodlands, part of which is called the Forest of Bere today. There have been two notable finds found in the village: Bronze Age burial mounds. Since then, much of the forest has been cleared for farms and homes, into modern times.
The village started out with only a scattering of farms and cottages. It was a tithing of the Manor of Hambledon. The Bishop of Winchester owned the village in 1316. He’d lease it out to his tenants. Denmead was called a manor in 1449 when it was owned by William Wayte. It was owned by his grandson, until he died. It then passed to other members of the family.
There is a record of the village on the map of the Hambledone Hundred. This map created by John Speed and published in 1611. After this time, the lands of Denmead were divided even further. In 1831, Henry Kennett became its new owner. There is another record of the Denmead Manor in 1908, noting that the Ecclesiastical Commissioners were the Lords of the Manor. Denmead was a part of the Hambledon parish, but split into its own parish in 1932.
The village contains the All Saints’ Church, and also a church hall that is rented out for gatherings. This church has been built of mostly flint and brick, with bath stone window surrounds. The church had an extensive rebuilt in the 1990s to fit more people. The church hall also had a upgrade at the same time.
During the time up to D-Day, troops would camp out in the forests by Denmead. Creech Wood also had a prisoner of war camp. There are still some remains of the camp buildings that can be found in the undergrowth.
Denmead is located right beside the Forest of Bere, and contains a vast amount of rural farm lands. There are more homes being built between Denmead and Waterlooville, but there is still some greenery in between. Most of the new development has been done by one company.
There are some amenities for the residents. The village has two schools, some shops, banking services, and a hardware store.
There is a village skate park in King George’s playing field to provide recreational activities for the youths of the region. This field also has a pavilion and the headquarters for the Denmead Youth Group. At the edge of Creech Woods is a wooden play park for children. It has wooden tubes and a raised obstacle course.
