Catherington is a small village of 3900 residents, located in the East Hampshire district of Hampshire, in southern England. The village is near Horndean, 1.8 kilometres away. The easiest way to get there is by the A3 road. Today, Catherington is within the boundaries of the Horndean Parish. Catherington is also close to the villages of Portsmouth and Peterfield. The village has a semi-rural character.
The village church is All Saints Church. The tomb of Admiral Sir Charles Napier, born in Scotland, resides here. There is also a monument to Admiral, Sir Christopher Cradock, who lived here for a time, and the tomb of the actor Edmund Kean who had a house in Horndean. His remains were originally in Richmond, Surrey, but when the building underwent restoration work, they were moved to Catherington.
Thomas Brett was born in Catherington in 1747, and was a famous cricket player. He was known for his fast bowling in the 1770s. He passed away in Kingston Cross, Portsmouth, in 1809. Caryl Thain was also born here, and he was a cricketer and President of the Surrey County Cricket Club. Sarah Doudney was a novelist and children’s writer who lived in Catherington with her parents, until 1871.
The church also has a hall for gatherings, and The Farmer Inn public house beside it. The local Scouts group meets in the Church Hall. The Hall is also used as a community centre.
Catherington is large enough for two schools, the primary school of Catherington C of E Infant School, and Kingscourt School, a private school.
There are three different newspapers and publications available for distribution in the village: Meon Valley News, Petersfield Herald, and The News.
The village of Catherington has a pond where there are many species of wildlife. It’s known to have existed since at least 1920, from a photograph by Herbert Marshall. Around this time there existed a vicarage building, but it’s gone now. Today, the pond is still maintained by the parish council. There are special pond dipping days for children.
Catherington Down is a hill located near the village. This hill is considered a Site of Special Scientific Interest, and a local nature reserve. It’s maintained by the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, and the Hampshire County Council. The eastern side rises steeply. On the hill is a chalk-based grassland. It’s similar to South Downs near Eastbourne. Catherington Down is a historic example of early strip cultivation, a method of farming where strips of land are partitioned, and alternated in a crop rotation system.
Visitors can enjoy a variety of footpaths across Catherington Down. It’s also a popular spot for local dog walkers. To reach Catherington Down, you begin at Catherington village, and head to Parsons Field, located on Catherington Lane. There is a car park for visitors to Catherington Down.
