Bisterne is peaceful hamlet located in the civil parish of Ringwood in the New Forest National Park in Hampshire England just 3 miles south of Ringwood town.
It is one of England's ancient villages and is listed in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Batestre. It was possesed by Godric Malf 1066 and was later given to his sons in 1860. Came the 13th century, Batestre became known as Betthesthorne, naming it in honour of its early lords, the Betthesthorne family. It was passed by inheritance to the Berkely family in the 15th century, and to the Compton family in the 16th century. It was sold to William Mills in 1972, and subsequently remained in the Mills family.
The Bisterne Dragon
The hamlet is popular in English folklore for being the location of a dragon slaying. Stories have it that a dragon had his den at Burley Beacon, just 3 miles east of Bisterne. The villagers, to keep the dragon from eating their cattle and attacking people, supplied it with milk every day. And so the creature would fly to Bisterne every morning where it would be provided with a milk to drink. Then one day, a valiant man decided it upon himself to kill the creature. He built himself a hut with two stray dogs inside lying in wait. When the dragon came one morning for its milk, the hut door was opened and the dogs attacked it fiercely. With the creature's attention focused on the dogs, the man, who was wearing an armour covered with glass, attacked and slayed the dragon.
A documentary version of this folklore is contained in the margin of a pedigree roll written in the early 15th century and is preserved at Berkeley Castle. The documentary named the dragon slayer as Sir Moris Barkley (or Maurice Barkley), the son of Sir John Barkley. The alleged location of the fight is called the Dragon Fields.
