Flower Delivery to Bishopstoke with Clare Florist

The civil parish of Bishopstoke is located in the borough of Eastleigh in Hampshire. Recorded in the Domesday Book, the village itself is located about a mile east of Eastleigh town centre. The town is also located on the east bank of the River Itchen which is next to Fair Oak. The village of Bishopstoke was annexed to Eastleigh in 1932 and then became an independent civil parish afterwards. It is part of the Southampton Urban Area.

The first time that Bishopstoke was mentioned occurred in 948 AD when King Eadred, the grandson of Alfred the Great, granted land at the “Stohes” to Thegn Aelfric. Bishopstoke is also part of the Itchen Valley navigation system that runs between Winchester and Southampton. It was first completed in 1710 and was used up until 1869.

For tourists, one of the more interesting locations in the area is Stoke Park Woods. Located just to the north of Bishopstoke, the woods include the rare quaking grass. Originally owned by the Bishop of Winchester, it is said that King John of England actually hunted in the woods back in 1205 AD. By 1540, they were licensed by King Henry VIII for a deer hunt and was enclosed by fence. In 1948, the Forestry Commission purchased the woods and today they are part of the community. Stoke Park Woods is also a source for timber and paper pulp.

Today, Bishopstoke is the home of the Stoke Park Infant School and Stoke Park Junior School which feeds into the Fair Oak secondary school called Wyvern College. In addition, there is also a Girl Guide group that can be found off West Drive and a museum in the High Street. You can find out the background of Bishopstoke and several of its more noted personalities, including the following;

-    Richard Drummer
-    William Gilbert
-    Samuel Sewall
-    John Bale
-    Dean Garnier

Bishopstoke still has many of its buildings that were first constructed in the 18th century. While the village itself retains its older structures, there is a very modern air about the place that manages to successfully incorporate new commercial and residential buildings while keeping its historic roots.  When visiting the village, you can see how it is divided into old and new sections that reflect the housing and commercial requirements of the times.

You can also find the churches of St. Mary’s C of E, St. Paul’s C of E, the Bishopstoke Evangelical Church which is located on Stoke Park Road and the Bishopstoke Methodist Church that can be found on Sedgwick Road.
