Flower Delivery to Mossley with Clare Florist

Mossley is a small town and civil parish that’s part of Tameside, Greater Manchester, and lies on the foothills of the Pennines, in the upper portion of the Tame Valley. Its name comes from the word “moss”, which means “boggy area”, and “lea”, which means “clearing in the wood”. This reflects the fact that the town used to be surrounded by thick woods, although this is no longer the case since the trees have been felled to create a grazing area for sheep.

Mossley can be considered to have the best of both worlds: it has shops, pubs, cafés, and other trappings of the modern era, although it has retained its rural atmosphere. This makes Mossley a great place to visit if you just want to have a quick escape from the city.

A Look into Mossley’s Past

There are evidences that Mossley was settled by humans thousands of years ago during the Stone Age. The Romans also settled in the area, as evidenced by an ancient road that they improved to make it easier for them to travel between the forts in Castlehaw (in Saddleworth) and Melandra (in Glossop).

The town grew steadily over the years. In the 1700s and 1800s, the people in the area became involved in wool production, which became the main industry in the village and lead to the construction of weavers’ cottages with weaving rooms. Later on, the invention of powered looms lead to the rise of woollen mills and cotton mills in the valley. The textile production ceased in the modern times, although there is still some light industry in the area.

Before the late 1800s, Mossley was divided among Lancashire, Yorkshire, and Cheshire. This changed in 1885 when the area was made a borough and became a part of Lancashire. Because of the Local Government Act 1972, Mossley was absorbed by Tameside (which was a new metropolitan borough back then) in 1974.

Mossley in the Modern Times

Today, Mossley is a lively town and is home to many commuters who go to work in neighbouring areas, particularly Manchester. If you decide to visit the area, make sure to drop by during Whit Friday (which is the Friday after Whit Sunday) to witness the Whit Walks. During this event, the members of different churches in Mossley gather and go on an inter-dominational parade through the town while brass bands accompany them. Whit Walks can be seen as an excellent display of inter-faith harmony in the town.

If you love music, you shouldn’t miss the Whit Friday Band Contest, which takes place after the Whit Walks and attracts numerous bands from all around the UK and even from other countries. The contest is held not just in Mossley but also in the neighbouring villages of Uppermill and Stalybridge in Saddleworth, and bands visit as many contests as they can to earn more prizes.

If you’re planning to visit the village with your loved ones, you’ll want to send flowers to Mossley, which is a great way to greet your mum a happy Mother’s Day or celebrate your wedding anniversary with your wife. We offer a wide range of flowers in Mossley and can prepare bouquets for all occasions, so just choose the Mossley flowers you want in your bouquet and we’ll take care of everything for you.
