Ashton-in-M

akerfield is a town in Greater Manchester. Long known as the place where locks and hinges were manufactured, Ashton’s history also includes a stint as a coal mining district due to it sitting on the Lancashire Coalfield. Incidentally, the town was also historically part of Lancashire but now belongs to the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan in Greater Manchester.

Haydock, a village between Liverpool and Manchester, used to form a chapelry with Ashton but they were split in 1845.

History

Ashton-in-Makerfield is far from being the only place bearing the name “Ashton” in Manchester. The name is derived from the Old English that means “farmstead where the ash trees grow.” Other towns with Ashton in their name include the market town of Ashton-under-Lyne in Tameside and Ashton upon Mersey in Trafford.
Records show that the town’s name was listed as Eston in 1212 with the suffix “in-Makersfield” added later on. The suffix is believed to have been the name of an old district to which Ashton belonged. Also, the name Makersfield is derived from the Celtic for wall or ruin as well as the Old English word feld, which means “open land.”
Ashton has a coal mining history owing to its being part of the St Helens Area of the South Lancashire Coalfield, which occupied around 60 square miles, reaching to within eight miles of Liverpool. There were 13 collieries in the area in 1867, some of them like Garswood Hall and Park Colliery remained active until the 1950s.
A few of the coal miners from the area were able to make a mark in the history of modern Britain. Stephen Walsh and William Kenealy were members of the 1st Lancashire Fusiliers. Joe Gormley served as president of the National Union of Mineworkers in the 70s and 80s.

The 19th century saw Ashton become famous for manufacturing hinges, locks, files, and nails in addition to having many collieries, cotton mills, and potteries.
