A suburban town located in North East London is Woodford, with its northern and western boundaries running through Epping Forest. In 1937, this green and leafy town became a municipal borough along a neighbouring town, Wansted and is now a part of Greater London.

Whether you are visiting this side of London for the first time with your wife or spending a weekend for your anniversary, it is best to learn a little about this town. Whilst you are on it, add to the romance by giving her Woodford flowers. There is nothing more romantic by surprising her with dinner and a beautiful flower arrangement.

History

Woodford is divided into three neighbourhoods, namely, Woodford Bridge, Woodford Green and South Woodford. Its name was derived from “Wudeford”, an Old English name for “ ford in or by the wood”. In the 1800s, part of the district was renamed Woodford Bridge for the bridge built to replace a crossing of the River Roding. Another area of the district was also given the name the name Woodford Green.

Adourned with wooded surroundings, this urban district easily attracted rich Londoners during the 1500s and soon enough, the streets were filled with structures and estates. Grand houses with beautiful gardens built in the 1930s still abound in this suburb.

Landmarks

Hurst House - During the 1700s, mansions started to be built in Woodford Green. This particular mansion was also referred to as “The Naked Beauty”, perhaps because it was once a mere isolated area on Salway Hill or  it was so called because of the sculpture of Italian Francesco Monti which was once located in its garden.

Churchill Statue - Another notable landmark situated in Woodford Green is the statue of Winston Churchill which was unveiled in 1959 with Churchill himself present.

The Fountain - A project of the Metropolitan Fountain and Cattle Trough Association, this structure is covered by a wooden canopy and sits in a triangular roundabout at the junction of High Road and New Woodford Road.

Gipsy Smith Monument - This can be found among the trees in Epping Forest. Gipsy Smith was said to be a Romany born on the very spot where the piece of stone lies. He then became a Christian and preacher and served at the Salvation Army.

Mussolini’s War Crimes - Sylvia Pankhurst, a suffragette and social worker had this sculpture made as a protest against the Italian dictator. The site used to be the location of her cottage in Woodford Green.

Obelisk - Erected in 1934, on the southern part of The Green, is an obelisk owned by the Woodford Green Amenities Group. They bought the stone balls used as a base from an antique dealer. These stones are said to have arrived Woodford in 1860.
