History of Raynes Park

This particular area of what would become part of London was rural until well into the 19th century. The first actual development occurred in 1838 when the London & South Western Railway went through the area, although a station was not built until a few years later.

The famed Cottenham Park was first developed in the 1870s in conjunction with Raynes Park that bracketed the train station on the north and south side respectively. From the beginning, there seemed to be a concerted effort to keep the Raynes Park area as a more rural setting thanks to the large parks that were being set up.
However, late into the Victorian Period towards the beginning of the 20th century, Wimbledon began to grow into the area and houses were being built in what once was rural land. Road development also progressed with twelve terraced roads being constructed south of the railway area and called “the Apostles”. While a considerable amount of development occurred in the 1920s, Raynes Park still has large sections that have remained rural in nature. Despite that, the area suffered from numerous strikes by V-1 flying bombs during World War II.
