HISTORY

Highgate adjoined the Bishop of London's hunting estate. A toll-house was kept by the bishop where one of the main roads headed north out of London entered his land. Several pubs were built along this route, and one of these, the Gatehouse, commemorates the toll-house.

The route of the first cable car to be built in Europe was in Highgate Hill, which is the steep street that links Archway and Highgate village. The cable car operated from 1884 to 1909.

Just like much of London, Highgate was damaged during the German air raids in the Second World War. In fact, the local tube station was utilized as a bomb shelter.
