Located in the north of London in the borough of Enfield, Enfield Chase may not technically be an actual “place” in the present day, but there is still a parish in the area that holds the name. The area was once completely covered by woodlands and at one point it was used as a royal deer park.
The first recording of the Enfield Chase name, when it was recorded as Enefeld Chacee, came in 1325. A similar name, Chace of Enefelde, was recorded in 1373 and the term Chace derives from a Middle English term which means an area of ground that is primarily used for hunting animals and breeding animals.
During the time of Henry II, Edmonton Parish and surrounding parishes were mainly a forest. The forest at this time was so large that it managed to extend from the city of London to an area of 12 miles north from the city. Enfield Chase was a part of this forest area and as such, it belonged to London citizens.
Sending Enfield Chase flowers is an easy thing to do
This was changed by the middle of the 1100s when the area, which had been referred to as the Park of Enfield or the Enfield Wood, was converted into a chase or hunting ground. The area was initially owned by the Mandeville family before it became the preserve of the Bohun families. At this time, many residents of the Enfield and Edmonton manors tried to claim common rights on the area.
There is a suggestion that Princess Elizabeth, who would later become known as Queen Elizabeth I would hunt on the chase, an act she undertook after being granted the West Lodge Park in 1547. She was granted this land by her brother, Edward VI. A charter in the latter half of the 1100s makes mention of the hamlet of Southgate, an area which took its name from the South Gate of the hunting ground area.
Sending flowers to Enfield Chase isn’t a difficult process
Enfield Chase was officially no more in 1777 when a new Act decreed that the land was cut up and shared out amongst a number of authorities.
In modern day London, there is an Enfield Chase Railways Station, which can be found in Windmill Hill in Enfield, which is in the Enfield borough in the north of the English capital. This is located in Zone 5 of the Travelcard area and any trains that travel through the station are operated by Great Northern or Thameslink. The station is found to the west of the centre of Enfield town and the present day station has been open since 1910 and although it was initially named Enfield, it was renamed as Enfield Chase in 1924 so that there would be no confusion with the station in Enfield town.
The services run between Moorgate and London 7 days a week with the last service of the day, in both directions, coming in around 9.30pm.
