HISTORY
Located on the West India Docks on the Isle of Dogs, Canary Wharf was one of the busiest docks in the world beginning in 1802. However, the port industry began to decline during the 1960s which ultimately led to all docks being closed in 1981.
The name Canary Wharf is taken from the No. 32 berth of the West Wood Quay of the Import Dock, which was built in 1936 for Fruit Lines Ltd and at their request, the quay and warehouse was named Canary Wharf.
Today's Canary Wharf came about when Michael von Clemm, former chairman of Credit Suisse First Boston, suggested that the Canary Wharf be converted into a back office.
Now, the Canary Wharf is one of the two main financial centres in London. It also boasts of being the place to find many of the tallest buildings in the UK, one of which is One Canada Square.
