Since the railway was completed in 1857, it has become a small village, along with the rest of the borough in Kent, with most of its land composed of private and rural parklands.

History
The settlement Beckenham is referred to as “Bacheham” in the Domesday Book of 1086 and as “Becceham” in the Textus Roffensis. The name is thought to be derived from Beohha's homestead “Beohhan” + “ham” in Old English). Aside from this, its etymology is believed to originate from the name of the small stream, called the River Beck, which is found here.
Although there is not much told about the village in early written history, archaeological evidence at the Holwood Park, where artefacts from the Stone and Bronze Ages have been found, reveals some proof of early settlers. In fact, there is a Roman camp sited here, and a Roman road passed through the district.
Further developments of Beckenham emerged until the early 20th century, including the Shortlands area, the Clock House, the Elmers End, the Park Langley and the Eden Park. The Manor of Foxgrove was also broken up at a certain point in time, with its name commemorated with a local road.
