Here's what you need to know about Aldwych:
History
In the 7th century, an Anglo-Saxon village and trading centre was established called Lundenwic, meaning London trading town. It was established about one mile to the west of Londinium which is now Aldwych. Most likely, the mouth of the River Fleet was used as a harbour or anchorage for trading ships and fishing boats.
Londinium became Lundenburch when Alfred the Great re-built the London fortifications in the 9th century. Lundenwic was most likely abandoned and became known as Ealdwic. The village's name was recorded as Aldewich in 1211.
Lundenwic was discovered again in the 1980s when extensive excavations were done in the area. Also, excavations in the Covent Garden area uncovered an extensive Anglo-Saxon settlement that stretches from the National Gallery to Aldwych in the east.
The old Wych Street was demolished in the early 20th century and a modern street was created. Australia House and Bush House were also included in the redevelopment of the old Wych Street.
Attractions
Aldwych is connected to the Strand at both ends and forms part of the A4 route and carries traffic in a one-way eastbound direction. The streets that adjoin Aldwych include Drury Lane, Kingsway, India Place and Melbourne Place. There are several notable buildings in the area, including:
· Aldwych Theatre – a West End theatre that is also listed as Grade II.
· Novello Theatre – another West End theatre in the City of Westminster and was built to be a pair of the Aldwych Theatre.
· India House – located between Bush House and the High Commission of Australia, it houses the High Commission of India.
· Australia House – a Grade II listed building that is home to the High Commission of Australia in London.
· The Waldorf Hilton, London – founded by William Waldorf Astor, 1st Viscount Astor, this is one of the most notable buildings on the street. The history dates back to 1908.
