Flower Delivery to Kempley with Clare Florist
Kempley is a tiny village located in the Forest of Dean district of Gloucestershire, England. It has only 230 permanent residents. They can visit the neighbouring towns of Newent and Ledbury for most amenities, and shopping expeditions. Kempley is noted for its two churches and its beautiful daffodil field.
St. Mary’s Church is one of the more well-preserved Roman churches in England today. It not only has the oldest roof of all buildings in Britain, but its interior is well-preserved as well. It’s uncertain whether the roof dates back as far as when the church was originally built, around 1120, but it has been dated at around the 1120-1150 time period. It’s unusual for any church from this time period to still have original artwork. It has a full set of frescoes, and these have been well-preserved through the centuries. One of the more popular paintings is entitled, “Christ in Majesty."
On one of the walls is “The Cycle of Life”. This contains smaller paintings within a circle, detailing the life of man. This wall is painted in tempera over dry lime mortar. The frescoes on the rest of the walls and ceiling were done with watercolours, while the wet plaster was drying, and eventually penetrated the surface and become permanent. It’s possible that the Cycle of Life and Christ in Majesty were painted a different points in history, and by different artists. From late February to early March, the church yard has an over abundance of daffodils.
St. Edward’s Church is the second church in town. It was built in 1903 in the arts and crafts style that was popular at the time. The church is made from red sandstone brick, and is designed as a mini cathedral. It has a large geometric lace panelled front window. William Lygon owned much of the property in Kempley, and he was instrumental in having the church constructed. The materials were all sourced locally, and built by the townspeople. The church was created so townspeople didn’t have to travel a longer distance to St. Mary’s. St. Mary’s was also prone to flooding, so that left the parishioners without a place of worship on those days.
Both church sites are managed by English Heritage, and are the perfect location for weddings. If it’s past daffodil season, there are many other types of flowers in Kempley to enjoy.
The Kempley Tardis, or red telephone box, provides a great photo opportunity, and there are many tours offered in the area.
The Kempley Daffodil Meadow is a large 1.2 hectare site of interest, with plenty of nature trails where you can have a lovely stroll during warm days.
