Flower Delivery Netherlee – A Suburban Residential Area in East Renfrewshire
Located about four miles south of Glasgow's city centre, Netherlee is just outside the city's boundary. It's part of the Greater Glasgow conurbation and is on the west bank of the White Cart Water.
A former rural hamlet that depended on mills along the river, Netherlee transformed into an urbanised area in the 20th century. It then developed into an affluent commuter suburb and in 2014 was included in Royal Mail's most desirable area to live in Scotland (Netherlee is part of the G44 postcode which won the recognition).
HISTORY
The Lands of Lee was what today's Netherlee and Clarkston was known in the medieval area. The land was centred on Lee Castle and the hill wehre the castled stood is now a park located behind the Netherlee Post Office.
By the 15th century, the Lands of Lee were separated into Netherlee, Midlee (today's Stamperland) and Overlee (a part of Clarkston). The Maxwell family of Bogton developed the original Williamwood House and the Williamwood Estate surrounding it from the 1660s onwards.
Netherlee was a small, rural village until the latter part of the 19th century. A lot of the residents worked in the printworks located on the bank of the River Cart. The first phase of urbanisation occurred in the early years of the 20th century with the development of Clarkston Road.
From that point on, new housing developments became popular and consumed much of the former agricultural land. But it wasn't until the 1920s when the structures were as fully developed as they are today.
