Flower Delivery to Ffrith – A Small Village in Flintshire, North-East Wales

Located in the community of Llanfynydd, the village of Ffrith is found in the southernmost portion. It lies in the wooded valley of the River Cegidog and is at a location where the stream of the Nant-y-Ffrith flows into it. Ffrith is surrounded in the east by Cymau; in the south-east by Brymbo; and to the north by Llanfynydd. Major towns that lie closest to Ffrith are Wrexham in the south-east and Mold in the north-west.

HISTORY

The name Ffrith is derived from a North Welsh word that means “pasture,” “enclosure” or “forest.” The word in turn is borrowed from the Middle English word frith which means forest or game preserve. The spelling of the village's name (the double f) and its pronunciation is particular to Flintshire.

During the 19th century, Ffrith used to be referred to as Belmont or Bell Mount. Locally, the village is known as “the Ffrith.” It was also during this time when the size of the village grew due to the quarrying of limestone and silica and the mining for lead and fireclay. As such, a railway line (Wrexham and Minera Joint Railway) was built through the village.

The 20th century saw a decline in industry in Ffrith. The last fireclay closed down in the 1960s. Even the railway shut down much earlier: in 1952.

Excavations in the area have revealed that is was occupied by Romans as evidenced by a Roman villa and a Roman road.
