HISTORY
Stenhousemuir took its name from a “stone house” which was a Roman building located on the north of the Carron River Valley and known as Arthur's O'on or King Arthur's oven. The description of the structure fit those of the “rotunda tabulata” given by Wace in his Roman de Brut of 1155 – the mistranslation may have given rise to the legend of the round table. Although the physical structure is no longer present, several detailed drawings were made in the 1720s and a replica was erected in 1763 to serve as a dovecote on the roof of Penicuik House's stable block in Midlothian.
The village of Stenhousemuir was home to the Falkirk Tryst – which is one of the largest gatherings of livestock farmers and buyers from around Scotland and beyond – from 1785. When the Tryst declined in Crieff, it was held during the second Tuesdays of August, September and October of each year. In his Essay on Agriculture, Thomas Gisbourne described the Tryst as “a scene to which Great Britain, perhaps even the world, does not afford a parallel.” The tradition of holding the Trysts continued until the 19th century.
The McCowan's toffee factory, which was established in 1922, used to call Stenhousemuir home. The factory made traditional toffee and the Wham Bar.
