HISTORY
The village was called Chich before being renamed to commemorate Saint Osyth. Saint Osyth or Ositha was a young lady involved in several fantastical events during her lifetime. The origins of the village are said to have been around the same time as the Priory during the 12th century. However, investigations have shown that there is little evidence of a settlement earlier than the 14th century.
Saint Osyth was the focus of witch persecutions in the 16th and 17th centuries with a total of ten women hanged as a result.
