History
Prittlewell was once the original town with Southend being its south end. It was originally centred at the joining of East Street, West Street and North Street, which by the 19th century was expanded and renamed Victoria Avenue.
The are was first settled in the late Stone Age by Prittle Brook. The population here evolved from hunter-gatherers to a more settled kind of life during the Bronze and Iron Ages.
During the Roman occupation, the area was greatly influenced by Roman presence as Roman-style dwellings started popping up around Priory Bank. Roman burial sites were also discovered in the 1920s and 1930s during road and rail construction.
Saxon raiders came to the area and Prittlewell became part of the kingdom of the East Saxons. It was also during this time when the Saxon name Prittleuuella was used.
Prittlewell Priory was founded by Robert de Essex in the 12th century as a cell of the Cluniac Priory of St Pancras, Lewes. The lands of the priory extended to the seafront and when a fishing settlement was established two miles south in the 14th century, it was considered as part of Prittewell and was called Sowthende or South End.
Southend was developed into a bathing resort in the 18th century. However, the priory as well as the lands was seized by the crown at the time of the Dissolution of the Monasteries by Henry VIII.
The 19th century saw the construction of a road to improve links between Prittlewell and Southend. Prittlewell railway stations were built in 1892 linking Southend and London.
