Flower Delivery to Great Totham with Clare Florist
Great Totham is a large village located in the Maldon district of Essex shire county. This region is located in the south eastern portion of England. Totham was a smugglers paradise and has a church, and school. Girl Guides are active in this region, and it’s served by a railway station to get to and from town. The warmest time of year in Great Totham is in July, while the coldest time of year is January to February. The heaviest rainfall happens from October to December.
St. Peter’s Anglican church can be found on Church Road in Great Totham, located south of the village. It’s an officially listed heritage building. It’s believed to have been built in the 13th century, in Norman times. There are records of a nunnery being on site in 1186, but it is unknown how much, if any, of the original church remained when the newer church was built in possibly the 13th century.
St. Peters Church likes to celebrate the bank holiday weekend with a flower festival. Every year the church is decked top to bottom with beautiful flowers. Besides the flower exhibition there are organ music concerts and social gatherings.
St. Peters Church underwent major repairs in 2012, with a retiled roof, reshingled spire, and a regilded weathervane. Most of the funding came from the English Heritage fund. Many are puzzled as to why St. Peters Church is located on the outskirts of the village. This was because originally the church would have been built for the lord of the manor, and then donated to the monastery. Most likely there were cottages surrounding the church, but these are long gone. The village centre has shifted, which is why the church is not at the town centre any more. There are several footpaths radiating out from the church which local village folk would have used to get to church.
Barn Chapel is a second old church in the region still in use today. It has a thatched roof, and was built in the 17th century. It’s been restored in the 18th and 20th centuries. This is a listed heritage building. It became a chapel in 1822 after Raven, a ploughman was overheard preaching to non-conformist workers. Services are held every Sunday, with healing services every Thursday.
The outskirts of Great Totham used to be a part of Tiptree Heath, which was a popular haunt for smugglers. They would hang out at a building called Spirits Hall. The original place of settlement was called Totham, and was located on the Mountains Road. This road wound around the highest spot in the region at 83 metres. It’s possible that the name Totham is derived from Saxon and means “look out” or “hill top dwelling”.
