King Harold II was killed at the Battle of Hastings which changed the course of British history. This battle first handed William the Conqueror the power of England. The Duke William of Normandy set sail with a fleet of over 700 ships for England to claim the throne which he believed was truly is. He lost over 3500 men in battle with the Normans just some few miles off Hastings while the English army lost over 5000 men that day. William had vowed to build a monument should he win the battle. The building of the abbey took about 25 years and the high altar of the abbey marks the point king Harold died.

Today, the abbey ruin is a major tourist attraction which is cared for by the English Heritage. Battle was built around the abbey and the high street still shows the abbey gateway. The gateway was built in1338 as a means of protection from another French invasion. Battle was well known for its gun powder industry in the 17th century. The mills in the area supplied the British army gunpowder which was used in fighting the Crimean war.
